5 Ways To Help Prevent Foreclosure

foreclosureOne of the best ways to prevent foreclosure is to just make your payments on time. But, this definitely isn’t always as simple as it sounds. Sometimes no matter how hard you try and how much you want to pay your mortgage, circumstances beyond your control can have you facing the reality of losing your home.

While you might feel like burying your head in the sand, one of the worst things you can do is to avoid your lender. Just as soon as you start having problems, write a hardship letter and send it to your lender. Most people don’t realize that by keeping their lenders informed, they will usually try to work with you and may give you enough time to get back on track.

If you’ve lost your job, been in an accident or injured and can no longer work, your lender can extend your payments. In many cases, if you let them know that you’ll be getting a new job, an insurance settlement or other money in the near future, they will be more than willing to work with you.

Many lending institutions actually offer advice to any of their customers that are about to face foreclosure. When you talk with your lender, ask them if they have any alternatives to offer you. It never hurts to ask for help, you don’t want to lose your home, but your lender don’t want to lose the money you owe either.
